About Active Faith NZ
Active Faith NZ is a ministry dedicated to supporting individuals in Christian ministry through online resources and practical training workshops. Led by Pastor Andrew Kulasingham, Active Faith NZ also offers counselling and ministry supervision.
About Andrew Kulasingham
I have been in Christian ministry since 1987, serving as a missionary, pastor, Bible teacher, and counsellor. I am trained in both Theology and Counselling, holding a Master’s in Christian Studies and a Master’s in Counselling. I provide pre-marital counselling, marriage counselling, as well as counselling support for men dealing with addiction, anger, and mental health issues.
What is a typical counselling session like?
As a counsellor, my approach is to create a safe space where you can freely express your thoughts and feelings. Together, we will explore ways to improve challenging relationships, enhance coping mechanisms, or achieve desired changes in your life. In sessions with couples, I ensure both partners feel heard and acknowledged as we address the real issues together. Rather than assuming expertise, I collaborate with you through meaningful conversations, empowering you with insights and confidence to take positive steps towards your chosen direction.
How long is each session? How many sessions will I need?
Each session typically lasts between 50 minutes to an hour, allowing ample time for exploration and discussion. The number of sessions required depends entirely on your counselling goals. Some individuals find they achieve their desired outcomes within just a few sessions. For those navigating more complex challenges, counselling may continue over a longer period. However, the pace and duration of therapy are always guided by your preferences and needs. At the conclusion of each session, I will discuss with you the option of scheduling future appointments based on your comfort and progress.
What about confidentiality?
Confidentiality is paramount in counselling, and I ensure that all our conversations remain strictly confidential. While I discuss cases in my monthly supervision with a professional supervisor, I never disclose identifying details.
However, confidentiality cannot be maintained if I have concerns about your safety or the safety of others. If such a situation arises, I will discuss it with you openly and sensitively.
Is there a code of ethics for a counsellor?
Ethical practice is very important to me. The New Zealand Christian Counsellors Association (NZCCA) provides a comprehensive set of ethical guidelines that I align with. After a few years’ break from my practice, I am currently in the process of seeking membership with NZCCA.
In line with my commitment to ethical practice, seeking regular supervision is integral. My supervisor is professionally trained in supervision, an experienced counsellor, and a member of the New Zealand Association of Counsellors (NZAC). Like myself, he adheres to strict confidentiality and ethical standards outlined by the association.
Do you take notes?
Yes, I will take brief notes during counselling sessions to aid in our discussions and ensure we remember important points. These notes are securely kept and accessible only to us both.
Can I cancel an appointment?
Yes, you can cancel your appointment. Please notify me as early as possible to allow for rescheduling. While there is no cancellation fee, early notification may enable another client to schedule an appointment for that time. However, frequent cancellations may lead to a review of our ongoing sessions.
Do you do online counselling?
Yes, I also offer counselling over Zoom for those living outside Tauranga. For this to be effective, it’s important to have a reasonably reliable internet connection capable of video conferencing.
How much will it cost?
At Active Faith NZ, we strive to offer an affordable counselling service to our community. Our standard rate for a counselling session is $80.00. If this cost is a barrier for you, please don’t hesitate to reach out for help. Your first session is complimentary, and during that time, we can discuss a fee that better suits your current financial circumstances.

Frequently Asked Questions – Ministry Supervision
About Active Faith NZ
Active Faith NZ is a ministry dedicated to supporting individuals in Christian ministry through online resources and practical training workshops. Led by Pastor Andrew Kulasingham, Active Faith NZ also offers counselling and ministry supervision.
About Andrew Kulasingham
I have been in christian ministry since 1987 serving as a missionary, pastor, Bible teacher and counsellor. I am trained both in Theology and Counselling holding a Masters in Christian Studies and a Masters in Counselling. In 2023, I completed a post grad training on Ministry Supervision and hold a PGCert in Theology focusing on Ministry Supervison.
What is ministry supervision?
Ministry supervision is a collaborative practice done in a relationship of trust where a supervisee meets with a ministry peer who is trained in supervision, to reflect on the supervisee’s current ministry practice, with the goal of personal, spiritual, theological, and professional development; to ensure competent, effective and ethical care towards themselves and those they minister to.
Why is ministry supervision important?
Supervision is not being supervised or kept an eye on. Ministry supervision is to enable a kind of “super-vision” – a seeing beyond into “a broader vision”. I am committed to regular supervision myself and have found that supervision conversations enable clarity where things are unclear, restoring vision when things seem a little blurry and bringing to surface unseen issues or practices that may be affecting my pastoral practice and ministry.
How long and how frequent are supervision sessions?
Supervision sessions last for an hour. The frequency of supervision is usually decided by you or by your church/organisation. For supervision to be effective it is recommended to be done on a monthly basis.
How do I prepare for a supervision session?
Prior to a supervision session, take some time to think about what particular issue/s that you want to bring to supervision. Ask yourself – what is it I want to focus on during this session? What is it in particular about this issue that I want to discuss? We will take the first five minutes of a supervision session to explore a focus for the session.
What about confidentiality?
Confidentiality is important in counselling. I will always keep our conversations confidential. I do speak about cases during my monthly supervision, but identifying details will not be used.
Confidentiality however cannot be maintained if I am concerned for your safety or for the safety of others. If a situation like that arises, I will discuss this with you.
How much will it cost?
The fee for each supervision session is NZ$80.00.
How do I make payment for my supervision sessions?
You will be invoiced after every session. Please make payment via internet banking to the following account:
Name of Account: A N Kulasingham
Bank Account: 12-3440-0053310-50
